If you’re into makeup, this talented 19-year-old would be a familiar face. She was featured at MAC Cosmetics KLCC for a recent campaign and she was noticed by Fenty Beauty not too long ago! Gushcloud Malaysia had the opportunity to have an interview with her and get to know the bubbly girl outside of social media. Read up, fellas!
First of all, why ‘Cilibling’?
Cili is short for Cecilia and Bling was because at that time I like blingy things.
When did you realize your passion towards makeup?
When I was 14. Basically when I started my YouTube channel, I learned as I grew it. I started a channel without knowing anything and I learned through making videos. Everything is self taught, from doing makeup to editing the videos. I’m the kind of person that when I’m really passionate about something I will make sure that I become really good at it.
Who is your favorite Influencer? Did he/she inspire you to do makeup?
Jackie Aina. Her personality shows through everything, she’s really relatable. I can’t say it’s only one person because the entire beauty community inspired me to do makeup. The life that they show on Instagram makes me want to be like them, I’m just like “They’re so pretty I wanna be like that”
How long did it take for you to be this skillful in makeup?
4 years, since I was 14 because I know I sucked really bad back then hahaha. When you just started to do makeup, I won’t expect anyone to be good at it, you can’t possibly be a master at everything the first time you try it. I would practice like crazy, I won’t do just like one look a day, I’d do two to three looks a day to make sure I master it, and I sucked for a really long time but I just kept trying and practicing. Whenever I had time I would just be drawn to my makeup even when I only had a few things to play with.
What started this makeup passion?
The makeup that started it all was my mom’s black eyeliner. I put my mom’s eyeliner under my eye and I’m like, I’m the prettiest girl in the world. I saved up money and bought one blush, and I was like, wow I could do so much with this I could use it as a blush, as an eye-shadow.. The first high end product I bought was the Urban Decay’s Naked 3 eye-shadow palette.
What would you say your other strengths or hobbies are besides makeup?
Strengths would be a good team worker. In a team, I’m easy to work with and I also speak my mind when needed. I have a lot of hobbies. I used to do kickboxing and I used to be a kickboxing instructor. I also love psychology. I’m crazy for it, I’m like a geek. It's so fascinating like my mind is blown every-time I learned new things. Biology. Not great at Biology but I like Biology hahaha. When I’m on YouTube, I watch Biology videos. (Cili doesn’t know who Jinnyboy is guys)
How do you overcome negativity?
I didn’t have the skill before I started social media. I was very self conscious and insecure, every 14 year old girl’s problem, you know. Once, I posted this photo and I did my brows differently because I was just starting to learn how to do my brows and the journey to perfect brows is a lot of horrible brow looks and that was one of them and someone commented “Ew your brows are gross” and five minutes later someone else commented “OMG I love your brows.” That’s when I realized, do I really need to care what these people think because that just perfectly demonstrated people will have their own opinions and pretty is subjective so I don’t need to care so much. It was very overwhelming but then I slowly started to put my phone down and focus on something else like Netflix and chill you know hahaha.
What’s the one thing that people always misunderstand about you?
Do you know what’s a coconut? People call me a coconut which basically means you’re brown on the outside but white in the inside. They think I’m Malay and uncultured because I always speak English. I love going live on Instagram because I love connecting with people. You get an opportunity to have a conversation but every time I go live, they yell at me for not speaking Malay and say stuff like “Your accent is so weird.”. I’m not Malay why would I speak Malay? My dad’s side is Han, which is Chinese, and my mother is Romani which also means ‘gypsy’. My family converted to Islam when I was a kid, so I grew up Muslim and I was born in China.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Owning my own brand. Not necessarily makeup, something to do with makeup, must be a social enterprise. And five years, I just graduate, I want to be a parole officer. I always kind of liked criminal-related things, always fascinated with law enforcement.
What’s the most exciting thing that’s happened in the past year? Any big makeup events or collaborations?
I was acknowledged by a lot of big brands that I respect. I’ve done a lot of things with MAC and I was a part of their campaign. I also got noticed by Fenty so that’s cool.
What kind of qualities attracts you?
Honesty. If I look ugly, you better tell me I look ugly. Also open mindedness and easygoing.
What would you consider your greatest accomplishment so far?
My Instagram page. I’m very proud of my Instagram page.
What is the one turning point that influenced you into becoming the person you are today?
Before, I used to be a really quiet person and self conscious. But when I got attacked from many different angles, it made me understand how invaluable those opinions are and I went from being self conscious to not valuing other people's opinions. I hit that somewhere along the social media line.
If you weren’t an Influencer, what would you be doing right now?
A kick-boxer. I love kickboxing so much. I would go for competitions and all that.
Name one brand you would die to collaborate with, and if you could do it with a celebrity, who would it be?
It’s a tie between MAC and Urban Decay and I would love to collaborate with Lady Gaga. I love her personality, she just screams “I don’t care” without even saying those words, like her actions show it for her, you know?
